Tarrying Grief (Poem)

Painting for dad

It’s only been a few months since I saw you last.
Seems like it’s been longer since the day you passed.

I’m trying to remember your last words before departing from this place.
I didn’t realize it would be the last time that I would see your face.

I want to pick up the phone and call you for one of our little talks.
Then I realize you won’t answer and my heart wants to stop.

My eyes look for signs of you and sometimes feel you near.
Then I realize you’re with God and not actually here.

Sometimes I gasp for air in moments of tears and grief
Then our family receives a painting and their love brings relief.

I wonder how the reunion is going up in heaven above.
Do you see all the others who believed in Jesus’ love?

Are you busy praising God like the scriptures say?
What’s it like to be there in His presence on this very day?

My view from here is skewed but my perspective hasn’t changed.
I will tell others, if only a few, about eternity set for days.

Jesus came to save our soul; no other gospel is true.
God’s redemptive love poured out upon the likes of me and you.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will no longer exist; grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer, because the previous things have passed away. Revelation 21:4

Our Lord and God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power, because you have created all things, and by your will they exist and were created. Revelation 4:11

By the Door

Old Rivers Family Photo (2)

If you asked my mom who is in heaven above.
Who was the first man I ever did love.

Mom would share a little story of when I was young.
How I would wait by the door; looking for him to come.

With my face against the glass; waiting to see him arrive.
Then get excited and giggle as he pulled in the drive.

His arrival meant a greeting; toss me up in the air and play.

I loved my Daddy coming home to me.
This little girl grew up loved by her daddy you see.

Many years and memories have all since passed.
The love of my dad will always last.

And now dad is arriving to a new kind of home.
Where Jesus said I’ve prepared a new place to roam.

A house with many rooms as far as the eye can see.
That’s what is waiting for those who believe.

Not to mention the people who have all gone before.
They will be there waiting by the door.

This time I won’t be by the door waiting for dad.
But Jesus will, He will be there and for that I am glad.

I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. John 10:9

A Christmas Prayer

He came that beautiful night in the form of a babe;

He lives today in the hearts that obey.

He knows your name and every little thought;

He loves you in a way that cannot be bought.

This gift of grace and love that lingers

Came wrapped in cloth with tiny fingers.

His presence that night brought far away men—

What a story it is and a way to begin!

It doesn’t stop there; it goes on, you see,

For Christ came and died just for you and me.

May your eyes be open to see the wondrous love

Of the Savior who was sent from heaven above.

May your ears be in tune to the beautiful sound

Of the voice of the Savior whose love abounds.

May your hearts receive hope that your Healer is here;

He has never left you and His presence is near.

May you know you are loved beyond any measure,

For Christ came that night because you are His treasure.

Good news and great joy, as the angels proclaimed,

The birth of the Christ child, in a manger he laid.

My hope and my prayer for you on this day—

May you see God’s love in a whole new way.

For the angel said to them, “Don’t’ be afraid, for look I proclaim to you the good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David”. Luke 2:10-11

Suffering

dreamstime_m_45008750

This time of year can be joyous and painful. I find it to be a mix of both. As I reflect on my past, I remember a loved one. As I consider my present, I’m blessed with family and friends.

There is much conflict in the world around us and it seems to be encroaching into our own part of the world. We are unsure, we are uncertain, we are afraid, and we are sad. We want life to be the way it used to be but then we see beauty in today when someone is kind, thoughtful, and loving.

We don’t know who to blame for chaos in the world or in our own heart. We don’t know when it will end. We hold on to the very Word of God and Jesus who is our hope and our future. We hold to the Healer who mends our hearts and heals our wounds.

Suffering

In the suffering and in the pause,
We search for meaning and the cause.

Nowhere to find the cause nor blame,
Often leads to sob and shame.

In times of difficulty, trial, and disparity,
We pray to the Lord and look for charity.

Asking God to take this cup from me,
We yearn for healing from this we grieve.

Our hearts are anxious and all a flutter;
Then mouths are filled with words we stutter.

In the face of mistrust and uncertain danger,
We look for hope amidst the manger.

Where Christ offers peace like no other,
Sharing good news and how His love covers.

Lives are at stake for all who are lost;
It is Jesus Christ who paid the cost.

So suffering will come, and suffering will leave;
The Word is our hope and our future to cleave.

Fix your eyes on the Healer who delivers us all,
Knowing Jesus has answered from the very first call.

Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds. Isaiah 53:4-5

The Word

bible

As the moon fades, the sun is rising in the East, I yearn for the Word with a hunger so deep.

What a perfect way than to begin with a feast, of God’s very Word to my soul shall I keep.

My Lord wakes me each day just before dawn with thoughts of Him and a song I embrace.

Let your Word refresh me as I press on, and hold me Jesus for this day that I face.

I tell you this dear friend of mine; listen closely so that your heart will hear.

God has a plan for you that’s divine; will you listen to Him or turn away in fear?

He speaks to me in so many ways and satisfies a void that once was great.

God can change your heart this very day; just trust in Him for He awaits.

Three

kim

This year we celebrate the year “three”—
The start of Light Women’s Ministry.

Now bear with me and in the bible you will see
There are many references to the number three.

John gives a summary of the following three days:
On the first day, people asked, “John, are you the way?”

“Of course not,” is his reply, as he makes the path straight.
Day two, he points to Jesus, “the Lamb of God!” John proclaims.

Day three, there was a wedding where a first miracle took place
When Christ turned water into wine, can you imagine each face?

Now let’s look at the gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke—
Where Christ predicts his death three times and then it comes true.

And what about Peter denying Christ those three times?
Suppose he didn’t realize just how well known he was to Christ.

Then there’s Pilate, who asked three times, “what has this man done?”
He didn’t want to sentence him, but it was the crowd that won.

So there he hung, between two criminals, for a total of three to die.
His love, compassion, and mercy reached across the sky.

And Jesus was crucified on that dark black day.
Then came back as our Savior on that much predicted third day.

Yes, there is something special with the number three—
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are the Trinity.

These three work together, both individually and apart,
In the lives of the Christ believers who set Him in their heart.

2 Corinthians 13:14, May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

The Storm

dark clouds

The Storm

The storm is coming, clouds dark and black
I can see through the clouds the sun is in the back

The sun’s yellow rays shining through to see
The beautiful skyline God laid before me

He wants us to know that His Son will always shine
Even through the dark clouds He is there behind

For the Lord our God need not hide
But gives us opportunities to release any pride

So give to the Lord, all your heart, soul, strength and mind
And trust in the Lord, He has been there all the time

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
